  1. Its been almost 14 years since high school that I haven't read a hindi book, and this one was highly recommended to me as a simple but engaging book to get back into hindi literature. It was easier than I expected it to be, and it seemed like I just picked it up from where I had left. Its like learning to ride a bike, once I got into the flow, there was no stopping me after the initial awkwardness. I had expected that I would be running for a dictionary every few sentences, which I was glad I di [...]

"These are the lines (a personal favorite) which you encounter when you are 3 pages into the book and you know why exactly the author chose a donkey as its protagonist. The book is a satire on the social, political and bureaucratic thread of India and our Gadha who is well read and can sp [...]

  3. In this book, the author takes a look at the human nature, our society and our governance system. Seen through the eyes of a non-human protagonist - a donkey, it is an objective commentary that is at times humorous, at times satirical and some times philosophical. 50 years after it was first published, it is still relevant - it is a sad truth that the issues it highlights still ail our society. It is a short book, easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. And the language is exquisite, without the u [...]

  6. This book is special in two ways. First, it is a satire and second, it is my first hindi novel. To be frank, I was attracted by the title and the cover image. The first few pages were interesting and then I discovered that the book was a page turner. I loved the satire in the book and the quickly moving storyline helped.Krishan Chander, uses a simple ploy to write his satire. He humanizes a donkey, makes it the protagonist and uses the first person narrative to get him to "assify" us human being [...]

  8. A brilliant satire, depicted aptly by Krishna Chander showing us the dark and elephantine corruption in our system. The Donkey in this short but beautifully penned book is reflection of common man. The Donkey lives among humans and has to endure all the tribulations and trials to deal with bureaucracy, corrupt babus, political leaders, media and law enforcements. One of the best book in the Donkey series, Chander proves why he was one of the best novelist in Hindi literature. The sarcasm and hum [...]

  10. Beautiful satire, apna literature phir apna he hota hay. Read a piece of Urdu literature after quite a while and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wonder how life goes on, times roll on but things never change. The problems, the ironies, they seem to remain the same.

  11. 3.5 actually. It is a good piece of satire at times. The analogies presented are quirky and fun to read. The book tends to be a bit idealist now and then which is kind of cliched. A good short read.

  12. A great satire with an even great sense of humour. The thought provoking issues that have been raised in this book do get conveyed to its reader in the best possible way.

  13. Brilliant sarcasm, and a great story that highlights how the powers that be fool us and manage to make asses out of all of us.
